Why One EV Is Quickly Becoming Two
For a long time, our advice at JSHolmes has been simple: if you can charge at home and your household has two cars, at least one of them should probably be electric.
For many families, that has been the ideal introduction to EV ownership. One electric car handles the school run, commuting, shopping and most everyday journeys, while a petrol or diesel vehicle remains on the driveway for longer trips or simply as a familiar backup.
But we are now seeing that pattern change.
Increasingly, households that already own one electric car are choosing another EV when the time comes to replace their second vehicle. Rather than returning to petrol or diesel, they are creating a fully electric driveway.
First-hand experience builds confidence
There is still plenty of debate surrounding electric cars. People who have never lived with one can understandably have questions about range, charging, battery life and whether an EV will suit their lifestyle.
However, once an electric car becomes part of daily life, many of those concerns begin to disappear. Owners learn how easy it is to charge at home, understand how far they really travel and experience the benefits for themselves.
They discover that the car can be charged overnight and ready each morning. They enjoy smooth, quiet driving and the convenience of making fewer visits to a filling station. Most importantly, they gain confidence in the technology.
That experience appears to be creating what we might call the “second-EV effect”. Once one electric car has proved itself, replacing the household’s other car with another EV feels like a natural next step rather than a leap into the unknown.
The EV divide is becoming more noticeable
What we are seeing at JSHolmes is an interesting divide. Some motorists remain firmly unconvinced about electric cars and have not yet considered buying their first one. Meanwhile, many existing EV owners are moving ahead quickly and becoming fully electric households.
In other words, the gap between those watching EV technology from the sidelines and those already living with it appears to be growing.
Recent increases in fuel prices have certainly encouraged more enquiries. However, a noticeable number of our EV sales have been to people who already have an electric car in the household.
They are not buying based on theory or because somebody has told them they should switch. They are buying based on their own positive experience.
That is perhaps one of the strongest endorsements electric cars can receive.
Is a two-EV household right for everyone?
Electric cars will not suit every driver or every household, and good advice should always begin with an honest look at how a vehicle will be used. Home-charging access, typical daily mileage, longer journeys and the public charging options available all need to be considered.
But for a two-car household with off-street parking and the ability to charge at home, running two EVs is becoming a realistic and increasingly attractive option. With a little planning, many owners find that both vehicles fit comfortably into everyday family life.
